  Veterans Memorial at George Sims Plaza, Straight Path. The plaza was named for Wyandanch resident George Sims around 2001. At the age of 23, Sims was a member of the 377th Ordnance Motor Vehicle unit, a black Army regiment, which was part of the D-Day invasion at Normandy, June 6, 1944. The stone reads: In Memorial -- A. At the corner of Straight Path and Mount Avenue, a “Wyandanch Welcomes You” sign includes a rider commemorating Wyandanch as the “Home of Actor Daryl ‘Chill’ Mitchell.” (pictured, at right) Another performing artist who grew up in Wyandanch is the rapper Rakim, born William Michael Griffin Jr. |
