Planning & Development
The Department of Planning and Development is one of the Town's largest departments. It has nine divisions and three boards:
- Division of Accessory Apartment
- Division of Building
- Division of Code Enforcement
- Division of Engineering
- Division of Planning
- Division of Plumbing
- Division of Rental
- Division of Signs
- Division of Traffic Safety
- Accessory Apartment Review Board
- Planning Board
- Zoning Board of Appeals
These divisions and boards are responsible for receiving and processing applications for building permits, for new subdivisions, accessory apartments, variances, and requests for traffic safety control measures. Planning & Development
The Building Division issues permits and enforces the Town of Babylon's zoning, local laws, ordinances and building codes. No building can be constructed or altered on any lot, plot or premises until a Town of Babylon building permit authorizing the work has been issued. The Building Division requires that copies of plans and specifications, and such other necessary information, be filed with every permit application.

The Town's Accessory Apartment Review Board conducts public hearings and reviews applications for temporary permits for accessory apartments. The following applications are available online:

The Town's Planning Board studies and makes recommendations concerning zoning to the Town Board. The Planning Board considers and approves the filing of subdivision maps for home development, requiring the necessary site and street improvements. The Board also reviews site plans for business and industrially zoned properties.Planning & Development

The Town's Zoning Board of Appeals conducts public hearings and reviews applications for variances of the zoning ordinances. The Board may grant a variance after considering the effects of these requests on the subject parcel, surrounding area, and the intended purpose of the zoning. Any person aggrieved by a decision by the Zoning Board of Appeals, or any officer, board or bureau of the Town, may apply to the State Supreme Court for review by an Article 78 proceeding. All such actions must be commenced within 30 days of the decision under contention. Residents may wish to consult a private attorney regarding such action.Planning & Development

The Traffic Safety committee meets monthly to review and discuss new traffic-related applications such as traffic signs and traffic calming controls. The committee is made up of (among others) a traffic engineer, a representative from the Supervisor's Office, a community member and a representative from the Suffolk County Police Department.Planning & Development
