[ARCHIVED] West Babylon Street Ceremoniously Renamed to Honor Beloved Community Member

West Babylon, NY, – The Town of Babylon is proud to announce the ceremonious renaming of a portion of Little East Neck Road to “Joseph Zito Way” in honor of Joseph Zito, a respected community member whose life has been marked by dedication to his family, profession, and the community.

Zito was born in Calabria, Italy, in 1920 and has lived a remarkable life dedicated to his loved ones and the people of West Babylon. In October 1944, Joseph married Mary, the love of his life, with whom he built a loving family, including two sons, Anthony and Carmine, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. As a skilled butcher, Joseph operated Zito’s Market in West Babylon for many years, providing quality service and products to the community.

Joseph Zito's commitment extended beyond his professional life. As a longtime and active member of the West Babylon Lions Club, he served as past President and was honored with both the Melvin Jones Award and the Robert J. Uplinger Award for his outstanding efforts and accomplishments. Additionally, Joseph has been awarded the prestigious Knights of the Blind recognition for his contributions to helping visually impaired and blind community members.

Supervisor Rich Schaffer, who was present at the ceremony, remarked, "Joseph Zito's unwavering dedication to his family, profession, and community has left an indelible mark on West Babylon. It's our privilege to commemorate his legacy." Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez joined Supervisor Schaffer in the ceremony, highlighting the significant impact Joseph Zito has had on the community. The ceremonious renaming of Little East Neck Road from 9th to 10th Street to “Joseph Zito Way” stands as a testament to his contributions and leadership in the community.
