[ARCHIVED] State of Emergency Declared Ahead of Winter Storm

Snow Plow

Supervisor Rich Schaffer has declared a State of Emergency in response to a major winter storm expected to begin early Sunday morning and continue through Monday evening.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 3am Sunday through 6pm Monday. Forecasts call for heavy snow with total accumulations of 10 to 14 inches. A changeover to a wintry mix Sunday evening is possible, which could result in sleet accumulation and a glaze of ice, before changing back to snow later Sunday night. Wind gusts of up to 35–40 mph are also possible.

Due to the expected severity of the storm, roadways may become impassable, creating hazardous conditions for civilian, emergency, and service vehicles.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

  • All vehicles must be removed from roadways by Saturday night to allow for snow removal operations.
  • Residents are strongly urged to delay all non-essential travel from Sunday into Monday.
  • If your driveway cannot accommodate your vehicles, cars may be parked on your lawn during snow emergencies until plowing operations have ceased.
  • Garbage should not be put out for collection on Monday as containers may become buried under significant snowfall. Hold garbage until your next collection day.

Our Department of Public Works (DPW) has been preparing all week, staging equipment, materials, and personnel. Despite these preparations, extreme cold, heavy snow, ice, and possible coastal flooding may impact operations, and icy conditions may persist throughout the storm and cleanup period.

As with all major storms, full cleanup efforts will begin once snowfall ends and conditions improve, and may take at least 48 hours or longer, depending on weather conditions.

We thank residents for their cooperation and patience as DPW crews work extended hours to protect public safety. Please plan ahead and stay safe.
